Contemporary Art at the Brontë Parsonage Museum: ‘Accessories’ seminar

As part of the bicentenary of Charlotte Brontë's birth, Tracy Chevalier's exhibition at the Brontë Parsonage Museum included the work of artist Serena Partridge, who was commissioned to respond to the museum collections.

Visitor reactions to the resulting installation 'Accessories' in Charlotte Brontë's Bedroom, have raised interesting questions about ways in which visitors interact with contemporary art in this unique setting.

This free, informal seminar offers a unique chance to meet the artist, as well as Jenna Holmes, the Contemporary Arts Officer from the museum, and discuss the issues that this conjunction of heritage and contemporary art raises. After an opportunity to view the Parsonage and the exhibition, the seminar will conclude with a facilitated discussion at a local café where refreshments are available.

The seminar is the result of an ongoing collaboration between the Brontë Parsonage Museum and the Centre for Critical Studies in Museums, Galleries and Heritage at the University of Leeds. It emerges from a wider question regarding the need for more opportunities for sharing ideas and experiences around commissioning contemporary art in heritage spaces.

Numbers are limited so booking is essential. The Parsonage Museum has limited space, so the discussion will take place in an upstairs room at the Cobbles and Clay Cafe on Haworth Main Street. This is approximately 5-10 minutes walk from the museum.
